Our view
The eighth Discworld novel is the first to follow the Ankh-Morpork City Watch, and it shows the series at its most confident: a dragon, a detective plot and jokes that keep landing on a second and third reading. It is silly by design; readers who want their fantasy played straight should look elsewhere. Because it opens a storyline of its own, it also works as a way into Discworld without the seven earlier books.
