“The Black Ice” is a tense, well-built second outing for Harry Bosch, a detective who trusts his instincts even when his job is on the line. A fellow officer’s death draws him into the drug trade and sets him against a department that would prefer the case closed, and Connelly uses it to deepen the character. Some readers find a few turns far-fetched, and some tire of repeated thoughts and long drives described street by street.
