“The Black Box” is a sturdy sixteenth case for Harry Bosch, published to mark twenty years of Michael Connelly’s Los Angeles detective. Some readers praise its brisk pace and the twists of its later chapters, even if the mystery is slow to catch fire for them. Others feel the series no longer matches its earlier books.
