Our view
“Wizard’s First Rule” is a long, traditional quest fantasy that opens a seventeen-volume series: a young hero with hidden powers, powerful allies, an absolute evil to defeat. Readers who enjoy the genre’s familiar shapes find it an absorbing adventure. Others see little beyond those conventions, and some are put off by passages of prolonged cruelty. Worth trying if classic epic fantasy is what you want and its darker stretches do not deter you.
