“Stone of Tears” is a big, emotionally charged sequel that takes “The Sword of Truth” out into a much wider world. Some readers who enjoyed the first volume find it a worthy successor and praise its richness of detail and its adventurous sweep. Others reject it outright, however, and at nearly eight hundred pages the opening book is the sensible test before starting.
