Our view

“The Sword of Summer” is a quick-witted Norse-myth adventure whose jokes and varied cast do most of the work. Riordan gives even his antagonists reasons for what they do, and none of his earlier series is needed to follow along. At over five hundred pages the middle drags for some readers, and some find the narrator’s voice too close to Percy Jackson’s.
