Our view

“The Serpent’s Shadow” closes “The Kane Chronicles” with the same mix of Egyptian myth, jokes and breakneck adventure that carried the trilogy. Brother and sister still take turns telling the story, and their two voices keep the end-of-the-world stakes light. It also teaches a good deal of mythology almost in passing. As a third and final volume it makes little sense alone: start with the first book.
