Our view
The fourth Percy Jackson book is where the series widens: the labyrinth gives it more variety than any earlier volume, and the larger conflict finally starts to take shape. Riordan keeps the familiar rhythm of quest, joke and twist, which children find reassuring and some adults reading along find repetitive. A few moments are grimmer than the cheerful tone suggests. Start with the first book, not here.
