Our view
The fourth Wheel of Time volume is where the series spreads out: the cast multiplies and the storylines part ways, which some readers find confusing, yet the main characters deepen noticeably. Rand changes most visibly, and Perrin remains the favourite of some readers. At 960 pages it asks for patience and repays it with a strong ending. Not a place to start; read the first three volumes before it.
