Our view
“Lirael” is carried by its heroine and her gradual discovery of who she is, set in a dark fantasy of magic and the restless dead. It is only half a story: the plot runs straight on into “Abhorsen”, which annoys some readers who expected a self-contained book like “Sabriel”. Some also feel the magic’s rules arrive just when the author needs them. Best read with the next volume to hand.
