Editor’s note The first of fourteen books, published in 1990 by James Oliver Rigney Jr. under the pen name Robert Jordan. Its opening deliberately echoes The Fellowship of the Ring, with farm youths fleeing their village, before the series goes its own way. Jordan died in 2007 with the end unwritten; Brandon Sanderson finished it from his notes in three books (2009–2013). Amazon’s series ran for three seasons (2021–2025).

About the book
