Grief, ageing, love and parenthood are the real subject of “Gentleman Jole and the Red Queen”, a warm and humane novel. Lois McMaster Bujold herself called it a book about grown-ups, not a war story, and it favours relationships over adventure while keeping her familiar humour. Some readers who wanted the saga’s usual action came away disappointed, as did certain longtime fans attached to Aral and Cordelia’s marriage.
