Our view

“The Trouble with Peace” is a middle volume that earns its place: political scheming that builds, patiently, to war. The early chapters belong to nobles and plotters manoeuvring for advantage, and the book then shows a battle through the eyes of ordinary soldiers who barely know what they are fighting for. It is dark, tense and unsentimental, and it depends on the first volume of “The Age of Madness” having been read.
