Lois McMaster Bujold sets the pair against a mysterious outbreak in a world where magic must do the work of science. Some readers see echoes of recent real-life experience; others find it bleak, with Penric suffering through much of it, yet warm to it on rereading. As the ninth volume, it assumes readers know Penric already.
