Our view
“Ninth House” is dark, eerie fantasy from its first pages, and its Yale of secret societies and occult ritual feels unlike most dark academia. Some readers note that the first half is spent revealing Alex Stern piece by piece, so the plot needs a couple of hundred pages to gather speed, and that the ending points firmly towards the sequel. It is a clear step away from the author’s young-adult territory.

About the book
Ninth House is a dark fantasy horror novel written by author Leigh Bardugo, published by Flatiron Books in October 2019. The novel follows Galaxy "Alex" Stern, a 20-year-old high school dropout and trauma survivor capable of seeing ghosts, who is surprisingly offered a full ride to Yale. Recruited into Lethe, the ninth house, she must monitor the eight secret societies that practice dangerous occult magic.
