Our view

“The Long Earth” has a setting strong enough to carry it: a chain of parallel Earths that almost anyone can suddenly step into. Exploring them is the pleasure; some readers find that the plot wanders and leaves its threads loose even for a series opener. Those expecting Pratchett’s comedy should know that some find little of it here beyond a few absurd touches; the tone is nearer to sober, idea-led science fiction.
