Our view
“Annihilation” works through atmosphere, not answers: VanderMeer declines to explain how Area X operates and builds unease by degrees, in a landscape the wild is steadily taking back. At just over two hundred pages it is brief, yet the careful prose asks to be read slowly. Ideal for readers who like their horror strange and unresolved; those who want the mystery explained by the last page will be frustrated.
Worth knowing Annihilation, from 2014, is the first and shortest of the Southern Reach books, about 200 pages, and the one to judge the series by. Four women, named only by profession, the biologist, the anthropologist, the surveyor, the psychologist, form the twelfth expedition into Area X, a stretch of coast that has been sealed off for thirty years and from which earlier expeditions came back changed or not at all; the biologist narrates, and the thing she finds first is a tower going down into the ground with living words on its walls. Jeff VanderMeer published all three books in 2014, won the Nebula and the Shirley Jackson Award for this one, and added a fourth, Absolution, in 2024. The film of 2018 keeps the mood and changes most of the plot.
