Our view

“The Field Guide” is a short, inviting first step into the Spiderwick world, and its many stylish illustrations do as much work as the text. The book sets up its faerie setting and leaves plenty unanswered for the four volumes that follow. Some readers place it in the line of Narnia. It is a good choice for children of primary-school age.
