Our view

Quick and illustrated, “The Seeing Stone” starts its fairy adventure in the thick of things. When Simon vanishes, Jared and his sister need the help of a boggart, a troll and a hobgoblin to bring him home. Some readers finish it in under an hour and feel less attached to the characters for it; others rank it below the first book. The drawings are a large part of the pleasure.
