“Shadows Linger”, the second “Black Company” novel, is for many readers a clear improvement on the first. The scale turns more intimate, a second viewpoint joins the company’s chronicler, and the prose is easier to follow. Some find the opening slow and confusing, with its new setting and characters, until the threads come together. It reads less as military fantasy than as the story of a man in trouble of his own making.
