Our view

The draw is a magic system with firm rules: Allomancy takes a while to click, and once it does the fights and schemes built on it are a pleasure to follow. Around it: a bleak empire and a crew plotting to topple its ruler. Over more than six hundred pages some readers find that not every stretch grips, though the ending lands hard. A strong start for readers who like their fantasy carefully engineered.

Worth knowing Brandon Sanderson built it on two questions: what if the hero of prophecy had failed and the Dark Lord won, and what would a heist story look like in epic fantasy. The magic runs on swallowed metals with strict rules, so the fights can be followed like a puzzle. The book closes its own story; the first trilogy ended in 2008, and a second era set about three centuries later began in 2011.
