Publication order

- Two eras.
- Era 1 is the trilogy (2006–2008) — read it in order from The Final Empire.
- Era 2 (2011–2022, four books) is set 300 years later; start with The Alloy of Law.
- Read Secret History only after The Bands of Mourning — it spoils the end of era 1.
A plan for the whole series
7 volumes, 3,981 pages, about 75 hours. At 45 min a day that is about 3 months.
Share of volume 1’s readers who reach the last volume. Chance of reaching the last volume: medium
- From volume 2 on, the number of ratings falls most before volume 4, “Mistborn: The Alloy of Law” (by 43%). Plan your break after volume 3, before the series plans it for you.
- Readers scored volume 2, “Mistborn: The Well of Ascension”, below its predecessor (8.6 after 8.9). If you slow down there, that is on the book, not on you. From volume 3 the form returns.
- The series is still running; the last volume came out in 2022. You will wait for the next one anyway, so no need to rush.
Stages
5 stages, with 4 short books from outside the series between them. You finish around February 25, 2027, about 3 weeks later than in one go.

How this plan is calculated
The plan comes from the pages and ratings of each volume: we split the series into stages of about three weeks’ reading, size each break to the stage before it, and read the chance of finishing from how many readers rate the last volume compared with the first. How we work out the plan →
