Our view

“Abhorsen” brings the Old Kingdom story begun in the previous volume to a satisfying close, and reads best as that book’s second half. Lirael carries it together with her companions Mogget and the Disreputable Dog, about whom a little more is revealed. Some readers find the magic loosely defined, with new rules appearing when the plot needs them, and anyone after ruthless, grim fantasy may think this one too gentle.
