Our view
“A Spell for Chameleon” opens the Xanth series with real invention: a land where everything is magical and each inhabitant has one talent. The plot is straightforward and the cast likeable. Some readers find its way of writing about women badly dated, even misogynistic, with female characters judged chiefly by their looks. Light and humorous in tone, it begins a series of 47 volumes.
