Publication order
27 volumes1973–2023Ongoing
- Twenty-five adventures, and only the first two need to be in order — after that Pitt is the same man in a different ocean every time, and you can board anywhere.
- Two things are worth knowing.
- Pacific Vortex! sits sixth by publication but was written first, before Cussler had the formula, and it reads like it; most readers save it or skip it.
- And from Black Wind in 2004 the books are co-written with the author's son Dirk Cussler, who took the series over entirely after 2020 — the change is audible, and it is the reason the later titles feel steadier and less strange than Raise the Titanic!
A plan for the whole series
27 volumes, 13,086 pages, about 240 hours. At 45 min a day that is about 11 months.
Share of volume 1’s readers who reach the last volume. Chance of reaching the last volume: high
- From volume 2 on, the number of ratings falls most before volume 7, “Deep Six” (by 40%). Plan your break after volume 6, before the series plans it for you.
- The series is still running; the last volume came out in 2023. You will wait for the next one anyway, so no need to rush.
Stages
16 stages, with 15 short books from outside the series between them. You finish around November 19, 2027, about 9 weeks later than in one go.
