Our view

“The Mediterranean Caper” is a lean, pulpy first Dirk Pitt adventure that opens with a First World War fighter attacking a modern air base. The attack on a Greek island leads Pitt to a saboteur and to the elusive head of a smuggling ring. Some readers enjoy it as a period piece of the 1970s, including attitudes that would not pass today. At just over 250 pages, it is a light way into the series.
