“Pacific Vortex!” is an easy-reading sea adventure: a nuclear submarine vanishes and Dirk Pitt follows a single clue into the mystery. Some readers find the plot simpler than in other Pitt novels and the supporting characters, villain included, forgettable. Some also find it dated and sexist in the manner of early James Bond. What it offers is undemanding adventure with a suave hero.
