Publication order
10 volumes1987–2012Completed
- Do not start with Consider Phlebas.
- It is first by publication and it is the one that puts most people off — a chase novel told from the losing side, deliberately alienating, and the least like the rest.
- Start with The Player of Games, which is the Culture explained through one man playing a board game against an empire, and is the book everyone recommends for exactly this reason.
- After that the order barely matters: these are standalone novels sharing a civilisation, not a sequence, and Use of Weapons, Excession and Look to Windward are the ones usually named next.
- The State of the Art is a collection of short fiction.
- Come back to Consider Phlebas when you already like the Culture — it reads completely differently then.
A plan for the whole series
10 volumes, 4,385 pages, about 80 hours. At 45 min a day that is about 4 months.
Share of volume 1’s readers who reach the last volume. Chance of reaching the last volume: low
- From volume 2 on, the number of ratings falls most before volume 4, “The State of the Art” (by 51%).
- Readers scored volume 3, “Use of Weapons”, below its predecessor (8.0 after 8.4). If you slow down there, that is on the book, not on you. From volume 9 the form returns.

How this plan is calculated
The plan comes from the pages and ratings of each volume: we split the series into stages of about three weeks’ reading, size each break to the stage before it, and read the chance of finishing from how many readers rate the last volume compared with the first. How we work out the plan →
