Our view

“Surface Detail” is a dark, complex late Culture novel whose most arresting idea is the virtual hell. Whole civilisations build these afterlives to torment those they condemn, and the struggle over abolishing them feeds several plots, a revenge story among them. Some readers feel the strands never quite join, or think that last plot echoes earlier Culture books. Ninth in the series, and easier for those who know it.
