Our view
“Matter” is a long, lavishly detailed Culture novel that sends two brothers and their sister in different directions after a wartime crime. Some readers prize it for a firmer storyline than the series sometimes offers. Others feel the travelling and the gathering of allies fill so much of the book that the pace slackens and the conclusion comes abruptly. Those who enjoy the scenery more than the arrival get the most from it.
