Our view
“War of the Wolf” is a dependable eleventh instalment of Cornwell’s “The Saxon Stories”, with Uhtred older but far from ready to stop fighting. With Mercia unsettled and enemies plotting on several sides, Northumbria’s warlord is pulled back into war. Readers enjoy it as another solid chapter of the saga; some feel it lacks substance and reads more like a bridge between more essential volumes. Uhtred’s long-time followers are its natural readers.
