Our view
“The Calamity Club” is a moving, hopeful novel of friendship set in Oxford, Mississippi, in the depths of the Great Depression. Kathryn Stockett’s second novel, seventeen years after “The Help”, brings together a girl without parents, a bookkeeper who never married and a resourceful woman fallen on hard times, against poverty, hypocrisy and narrow freedoms. Some readers single out its sharp, lively dialogue.
