Our view

“Tigana” is fantasy carried by its prose and by the depth of feeling behind it. Kay sets it on a peninsula loosely modelled on Renaissance Italy and builds it around grief, vengeance and the hope of redemption, with dialogue in which even minor figures speak with weight. Some readers find the cast a touch too flawless, everyone beautiful and gifted; it reaches furthest with those who read fantasy for language and emotion.
