Our view

“Stargirl” is a short, sweet-natured novel about nonconformity, built around a girl who unsettles her whole school simply by being herself. Some readers find it poignant; others find it far-fetched and dated, with a tone younger than its high-school setting. The heroine either charms or irritates. At two hundred pages, it is best suited to younger teens.
