Our view

“Pebble in the Sky”, Asimov’s first novel, is a short adventure that drops a twentieth-century man into a galactic empire and a conspiracy. Readers disagree about its middle: for some it is the strongest stretch, with its mystery and the play between characters; for others the story goes flat after the opening third. Some also feel that the only significant woman exists mainly to be rescued and loved.
