Our view
“Dragonflight” opens a long dragon saga with a strong story, but it reads very much as a book of 1968. The tale comes to a proper close and still leaves readers curious about the next volume. Some of them, though, struggle with gender roles that belong to its era or find the treatment of its women hard to accept, and the time travel strikes others as too easy a solution.

About the book
Dragonflight is a science fiction novel by the American-Irish author Anne McCaffrey. It is the first book in the Dragonriders of Pern series. First published by Ballantine Books in July 1968, it was a fix-up of two novellas which between them had made McCaffrey the first woman writer to win a Hugo and a Nebula Award.
