Our view
“Mavericks” hands much of the stage to the soldiers stranded on Paradise in a funny, inventive sixth book of “Expeditionary Force”. A training mission with a ship of teenage alien cadets goes badly wrong, and Emily Perkins and her team lead the story before Joe and Skippy return. Some readers welcome that break, while some find parts slow or feel the pair’s problem-solving talks are wearing thin. Alanson’s eye for unintended consequences is on full show.

About the book
"The remnants of the Expeditionary Force stranded on the alien-controlled planet 'Paradise' get a chance to prove themselves, in a simple off-world training mission with a ship full of teenage alien cadets. When the mission goes horribly wrong and the survival of everyone on Paradise is at risk, the Merry Band of Pirates may have to come to the rescue. Unless they get killed first..." -- Page [4] of cover.
