Our view

The second book of the “Nevernight Chronicle”, “Godsgrave”, moves fast and saves a run of well-hidden reveals for its final stretch. The gladiatorial arena suits Mia’s story, and the footnotes are fewer than before. Some readers find parts of it written with a male gaze and the sex scenes awkward, and some think a few clichés blunt the surprises. It is a dark book, heavy on blood.
