Our view

“Nevernight” is a dark fantasy of revenge and assassin training told in a deliberately ornate voice, and that voice decides who stays. The mannered prose of the opening and the world-building footnotes put some readers off early; others count the surplus detail among the pleasures, along with the heroine’s shadow companion. It is an adult book, explicit about sex and violence, and close to seven hundred pages long.
