Our view

“Fire” stands or falls with its heroine, a monster in human shape who is hated for what she is. Readers who connect with her value a strength that leaves room for sensitivity, and a supporting cast drawn in shades of grey. Some find the pace slow for its length, the drama between characters wearing or the ending bleak. This companion to “Graceling” is set in a neighbouring kingdom and largely tells its own story.
