Our view

“Graceling” wins readers over with its heroine: Katsa, gifted with a talent for killing, rejects the part her uncle’s court has written for her. In this debut the idea behind the special powers is fresh, and the adventure and romance move briskly. Some readers find it light, with a villain who is barely sketched; taken as quick, warm-hearted young adult fantasy, it holds up well on a second reading.
