“Akata Witch” is an adventurous, hopeful young adult fantasy that owes much of its charm to its Nigerian setting. Some readers find its outline close to “Harry Potter” and still enjoy it more, for the world Okorafor builds around magic, friendship and a murder mystery. It is the first of three Nsibidi Scripts novels, a good choice for anyone who wants such a story far from the usual backdrops.

Akata Witch is a 2011 young adult fantasy novel written by Nigerian American author Nnedi Okorafor. It was nominated for the Andre Norton Award and it is the first novel in her The Nsibidi Scripts series; it is followed by two sequels, Akata Warrior (2017) and Akata Woman (2022).
