Our view
Sanderson’s first published novel already has an original, carefully explained magic system, dependable characters and a plot of royal conspiracy. It makes a good way into the Cosmere, and it leaves newcomers curious about the wider universe. Readers who arrive from his later books enjoy it but may find it less striking by comparison, and at 664 pages it asks for some patience.
Worth knowing Brandon Sanderson’s first published novel (2005), sold after years of rejections while he was working on his thirteenth book; the editor Moshe Feder bought it about a year and a half after receiving the manuscript. It is a standalone set in his shared Cosmere universe, rotating between three viewpoints, Raoden, Sarene and Hrathen. A tenth-anniversary edition (2015) carries his revisions.

Elantris is a fantasy novel written by American fantasy and science fiction writer Brandon Sanderson. The book was published on April 21, 2005, by Tor Books and was Sanderson's first published book. The book gained generally positive reviews, and has been translated into multiple languages. Two related works, Hope of Elantris and The Emperor's Soul, have been released, and two additional novels in the series have been announced.
