Our view

“The Summoning” opens the “Darkest Powers” trilogy with a ghost story steeped in a dark, haunted atmosphere. Kelley Armstrong writes fluently and without fuss, and necromancy gives the tale an angle of its own. Some readers find the plot slow and the heroine too quick to complain. The volume stops on a cliffhanger and is plainly the first third of a longer story.
