Our view
Dark fantasy for young readers, “The Spook’s Secret” opens up the Spook’s own past in the third of “The Wardstone Chronicles”. Tom makes a level-headed hero, and some readers relish the moral ambiguity of figures such as Alice and Meg. Not everyone is persuaded by the villains’ motives, and some rank the book slightly below the second.
