The prose of “The Crossing”, a dark and serious Western, is of rare beauty. It is the middle novel of McCarthy’s “Border Trilogy”, after “All the Pretty Horses”. Some readers need time to get used to the style, others find it slower than its predecessor, and those without Spanish can be frustrated by the passages left in that language. For many, the writing repays every difficulty.

The Crossing is a novel by American author Cormac McCarthy, published in 1994 by Alfred A. Knopf. The book is the second installment of McCarthy's "Border Trilogy," following the award-winning All the Pretty Horses (1992), and preceding Cities of the Plain, where the protagonists of both novels work together on a ranch in southern New Mexico.
