Our view

Dark, tense village horror: in “The Burning Girls” a vicar and her teenage daughter arrive in a parish where an old crime still festers. Some readers find the many mysteries neatly tied up, with surprises kept for the end; others feel there is too much going on, or find the prose choppy and the characters flat. It has the atmosphere of a cursed country church, and that atmosphere is what some readers recommend it for.
