Our view

“Terrier” works as a fantasy police procedural: the investigation at its centre is well handled and tense when it needs to be. Tamora Pierce tells it in Beka Cooper’s own voice and surrounds her with characters some readers warm to, a cat among them. It opens the “Provost’s Dog” trilogy, two centuries before the main Tortall novels. A reader meeting Pierce for the first time as an adult may find it pleasant and no more.
