Our view

“Bloodhound” pairs a fantasy police story with a heroine, Beka, who goes on growing and still makes mistakes. Some readers miss the first book’s supporting characters and find they barely appear here, and others find the romance shallow. The second book of the “Provost’s Dog” trilogy follows the young guardswoman in the kingdom of Tortall, a setting some readers enjoy for magic that belongs naturally to its medieval-style world.
