Our view

“Son of a Witch” returns to Maguire’s Oz through Liir, Elphaba’s son, and widens the story “Wicked” began. In the decade after his mother’s death and the Wizard’s fall, he tries to work out who he is under the weight of her legacy, among familiar faces and new ones. Some readers rank it below “Wicked” and note that it settles few of the questions left open. It reads easily.
